First Dog Rescued From The Butcher Shop Has Been Adopted

Ruby is a young Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkie) and is one of the twenty dogs our organization, along with a Korean rescue group, has rescued from a Korean dog meat market.

SHE HAS BEEN ADOPTED ALREADY and will be going to her new loving home this Sunday.

The first twelve rescue dogs arrived at the freight terminal of Korean Airlines on Monday. Our group was ready for them. My wife is in the lavender shirt and black apron.

We made sure that all the dogs were in good shape and that none were obviously suffering from the flight from Korea.

We then brought them to the house of a volunteer who lives near L.A. International Airport. We had a mobile groomer waiting there and the first thing we did was to get the dogs clean. The ladies than gave the dogs a cursory look over and my wife checked for microchips and inserted chips when needed (she's a retired registered nurse).

Eight more dogs arrived yesterday, August 31st. However, I was not there when the second group arrived.

Here are some of the other dogs that arrived on Monday...

I brought the six dogs, who will be staying with Judy and I, to the vet on Tuesday morning. They were surprisingly healthy with just a couple of ear infections which can be easily treated with ear drops. BTW, that is why Ruby's ears look greasy...

Since we ae a very small rescue group, a rescue group in Arizona who specializes in dogs like this is going to foster six of the twenty dogs. I will drive the dogs there on Saturday. This group has a couple of professional trainers and we are sending the least socialized and one somewhat nippy dog.

You certainly cannot fault these dogs for lack of socialization or because one or two might try to bite. They have lived in a horrible environment. However, they are safe now and we will ensure that they go to homes in which they will be appreciated.

In the light of a really interesting item that has appeared in the science journals that dogs actually DO understand quite a bit of what one says to them.... was there a language problem with Korean dogs?

Seriously though, I think you people do an amazing job rescuing these poor animals. I grew up with dogs but have not had one since I left my childhood home. I really wish I could have one now, but my partner, who was mauled by a dog as a very small child, has a morbid fear of anything with fur and a pulse... such a pity, they are wonderful companions.

We received a list of Korean words which would be appropriate in interacting with dogs. We also tried to give them English names which sounded quite a bit like their Korean names.

In reality, however, they did not have much human contact in Korea so English may be the first language that they will hear on a regula basis.
