    Italian Pilot Boat C&C Welcome

I captured this Italian Pilot Boat while leaving the Naples Harbor on a cruise this summer. I was playing around with my 70-300mm. I like the composition, would have rather had a bit more "wake" behind him. Thinking the color maybe a bit off - too blue. I am waiting a bit before making the final decision.

    C&C Welcome - thanks

    Agreed on all counts.

Consider posting larger images of your photos so people can enjoy the viewing experience more and critique your images more effectively. As an example, I think you've blown some of the bright tones in the water but it's difficult to accurately assess them when the image is so small.

    Hi Erik,

I hope you don't mind, I jiggered with your IMG link and made a 1024px wide version available here, compared to the 600px version you posted. You or I can remove it if you'd rather not show it that size - let me know if you want me to 'unedit' your post.

I suspect the excess blue is because you shot this with mostly the sun shaded side of the boat facing us, so it is lit by Blue sky and the water of the Med. (and I remember that's pretty blue too). WB was "Manual" (but doesn't say what) in EXIF.

I'd leave a little more room at the top of frame, but otherwise the composition is good.

    HTH, Dave

Your whites, in sunshine, appear to be about correct.

I find that excessive blue on water is a frequent problem for me.

What I do for correction is to use an Adjustment Layer set to Colour Blend mode and work on the Blue Channel. Very slight adjustment of the blue shadows or midtones will often give a quick result. Sometimes I then have to make a small extra tweak to other colours particularly green highlights.

Because this layer is working in Colour mode any brightness adjustment should be done on another layer. Using Luminosity Blend mode for brightness adjustment can be useful in avoiding the creation of more colour problems.

I like the composition and agree with Dave's recommendation for a bit more space on top. Maybe a 16x9 format.
