    Complex

Just looking for new angles on an often photographed structure. The Richardson Olmsted Complex, formerly Buffalo Insane Asylum. Was just discussing with a friend how easily recognized sites have been photographed so often that anything presented now is basically a repeat; how do you get that unique view when something has been covered for hundreds of years?

If I knew the answer to that one John, I'd take and show a lot more pictures.

It applies to just about anything we can get in front of a camera, except possibly portraiture, where the subjects are unique, as is their appearance on any given day.

Or some technological advancement that allows shots not commonly possible; e.g. drone photography.

Your shot's viewpoint is probably in the one percent 'different' category for this building though.

Perhaps that's what draws people to photograph clouds, I guess they are unique and by implication, when combined with landscape, can make an oft repeated shot magnificent on a rare occasion, but usually only if you're lucky enough to be there at the time, or are incredibly lucky, or persistent.

At first I thought it was part of our Canadian parliament buildings but then I read it was the formerly Buffalo Insane Asylum which is not too far off from what I was thinking . Nice shot and perspective.

    Good one!!

John, that is a beautiful shot. I went to school in Columbia, Missouri and there was an old abandoned mental institution north of town. I always thought it would be fun to spook around in it with a camera.

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for commenting. Part of what prompted me to include the query was a recent encounter with a photographer who still shoots film, he obviously has seen and photographed everything I could present as a city scene and it made me think how our vacation/travel shots aren't unique any more; so what can we do as photographers to entice our friends and family to expand their horizons or at least marvel at what we bring back home in the form of photos.

    Hi Maurice,

Thanks for comment, I started photographing this structure from about 200 yards away, kept thinking "Ok this is the best angle" and kept approaching until I was about ten feet away.

    Hi Paul,

Thanks for commenting. That excursion would be a fun adventure, if it's not illegal go for it.

That perspective would work in black and white with a darkened menacing sky. Nice perspective John.

    Mark,

Thanks for commenting, I might give it another shot. When photographing on this day I played around with flash trying to make day into night; so I can envision your idea.

    Wonderful colors and texture!

Personally, I've never felt a problem with photographing a subject the same way it has been photographed countless times for the same reason I would never have a problem with listening countless times to a famous recording of a famous piece of music; anything that is beautiful is worth experiencing over and over again.

+1 to the comments about a mono shot or conversion. I think it would have a really nice mysterious image.
