I broke my own rule.

I don't normally take photos of strangers but this couple, sitting on a practically deserted beach on a cool autumn afternoon, tugged at my heart strings. They sat there practically motionless and in complete silence for the longest time. Him, staring at the river or maybe just staring. Her gaze never left his face as she ever so gently ran her fingers at the back of his head. Were they friends, lovers, relatives? I don't know but I sensed that they were silently sharing a heavy burden or facing a difficult challenge.

I discretely took this photo and quietly left them.

Excellent. Very touching. It's up to the viewer to set the context. I choose to see a loving daughter cherishing fleeting time with her dad.

I found the color not adding to the moment and the wide expanse of non contributing elements also non-essential to conveying the moment. Perhaps:

I like your crop as it focuses the attention on the couple. As for colour, I think that it adds a touch of warmth that is lost in the black and white version. But then again, I am not a fan of black and white photos to start with.

I'm really glad you decided to push the envelope, "break your own rule" and take the shot, as I think it is excellent.
It captures an intimate moment in time and tells a wonderful story.
I prefer the colour version for it's warmth, and am ambivalent about the crop.
Even without it, the only place for the viewers' eyes to go is to the couple and in my opinion nothing is gained by cropping.

Coming from someone who only does street photography, this is indeed high praise. I am glad that I took the picture but I don't think that I will make a habit of breaking my rule. It just doesn't feel quite right for me.
