It seems natural that one could set up a portion of the photodiodes to be at, say, ISO 100, and another portion to be, say, at ISO 800, with some blending in the middle. This would allow to create a low quality GND; better than nothing it seems, specially for small prints and if the camera has a very good noise control. And one could circumvent a bit the noise issue by averaging pics.
