Wow they are awesome, great images Richard
Incredible pictures, but I think the first one is of a Hanging Fly (a relative of the Scorpion Flies, but with longer legs). The second is much more like a Crane Fly.
John
Two fabulous shots. The second one is outstanding, so sharp and detail brilliant
Yes, I would agree that the first one isn't a cranefly. Note the thickness of the 2 nd and 3 rd femora and the way the tarsus tips are curling around the leaf tips. I have never known of a carnivorous cranefly.
A few craneflies have rather ornate antennae like the second fly.
WOW...amazing creations works of Nature!!!
Many thanks to all who replied. The first fly is indeed a Scorpion Fly (and female) according to the Queensland insect website. So I've learnt something new; the greater the sphere of our knowledge the greater it's surface area of contact with the infinity of our ignorance.
I'm continually chipped for miss-identifying birds on another forum but I'm happy to have found many new friends to set me on the right track.
Two great images Richard of very interesting critters. How about some close ups of that amazing head in No 2
Wow great shots.
Dave
Excellent set of images.
