    Crane Fly

I have never seen a Crane Fly catch its prey before - I was amazed at its ferocity.

The beetle never stood a chance. Also look at the number of joints in the crane fly's legs.
Another crane fly - are those antennae or a fly swat?

I could have done with something like that to keeps the mozzies off.

Incredible pictures, but I think the first one is of a Hanging Fly (a relative of the Scorpion Flies, but with longer legs). The second is much more like a Crane Fly.

Yes, I would agree that the first one isn't a cranefly. Note the thickness of the 2 nd and 3 rd femora and the way the tarsus tips are curling around the leaf tips. I have never known of a carnivorous cranefly.

A few craneflies have rather ornate antennae like the second fly.

    Re: Crane Fly

Many thanks to all who replied. The first fly is indeed a Scorpion Fly (and female) according to the Queensland insect website. So I've learnt something new; the greater the sphere of our knowledge the greater it's surface area of contact with the infinity of our ignorance.
I'm continually chipped for miss-identifying birds on another forum but I'm happy to have found many new friends to set me on the right track.
