    Algonquin Park - Fall Leaves

The weather was quite nice yesterday, so we decided to head off to Algonquin Park for the day, as the maple leaves had hit their peak colours. It's about a 2-1/2 hour drive from where we live. Located in the Madawaska Highlands, at an altitude of 600m / 2,000 ft, this area is the first to get the fall colours.

As luck would have it, the weather forecast was wrong (again?) and when we got to within 30 km / 20 miles of the part, a solid band of clouds covered the sky. At least they had some texture. We staying until almost sunset, in hope of a break in the clouds near the horizon to "kiss" the tops of the trees, but no such luck.

We were there primarily to do a bit of hiking, so I had my Panasonic GX7 with the 14-140mm lens along. My best shot of the day was the somewhat iconic view associated with this park - some canoeists on one of the 2,400 lakes in the park.

My first experience of Canada was in 1982 when I went to visit my uncle in Toronto. We spent 3 days in a cabin in Algonquin in the beginning of October and I remember the beauty as depicted by your image. I shot 7 rolls of 36 exposure film - cost a bit to get them developed/printed! Thanks for the memory - it's as beautiful now as it was then.

The sky could surely have been worse, Manfred. As you said it has some nice texture to it. And overcast isn't as bad for leaves as it is for many other types of landscape. Quite an accommodating couple in the canoe to come along at the right time. Poster shot for the park.

That's just gorgeous. The calmness of the lake and those colours make for a beautiful composition. The canoe just finishes it off. Glad you weren't tempted to over saturate it as well.

I agree Dan, but what I was hoping for is a situation where the light just "kisses" the tops of the trees (especially during golden hour) and the colours can be just gorgeous, and the conditions were not there for that.

As for the canoe, the downside is that they are so quiet that we don't get any advanced warning that they are coming. We were at a picnic table having lunch when I caught them out of the corner of my eye as they were coming through some trees just to the left of where we were sitting. I had to drop my sandwich and make a mad dash for the camera to get the shot.

We always have to make the best of what nature offers and you definitely caught a beauty. I was not expecting water with reflections and some folks canoeing. You did benefit from little breeze giving you a nice still surface.

I could shoot there day after day and I don't think I'd ever tire of it - great shot Manfred.

Great shot Manfred. Sometimes, it's better to be lucky than good at getting the right shot. I was going to ask you how much you paid those folks in the canoe to pose for that shot.
