Whenever I walk along a beach I always come home with a pocket full of discarded fishing line (even with hooks attached). The average fisherman's carelessness takes a terrible toll on wildlife, This Oyster Catcher seemed to be limping.

The reason was soon apparent when zooming in on the image. This poor bird will soon lose a foot.

We discard so much without any though of the consequences and this is one. John is right. Very well spotted.

My feelings also. I hate to see animals damages needlessly in this way.

I always make sure that my line is properly disposed of. In fact, even at home, I don't just throw it in the trash because that way, it will eventually find its way to a land fill and possibly come to the surface.

My local tackle store has a bin for discarded fishing line. One of the line manufacturers collects this bin regularly and disposes of the contents in a proper manner...

One of the most difficult problems is when we are live lining anchovies (casting the anchovy with no weight attached) and a large pelican grabs the bait and hook. It is quite a job getting the bird to the boat and using pliers to get the hook from its mouth.

One of the reasons that I don't use chrome plated fish hooks is that if a bird or fish gets away with a hook in its mouth, a non plated hook will soon rust out.

It heartbreaking to see shore birds and such got caught in fishing lines.
