The weather is a little iffy but if I can I will follow this series to flight day.

It will be interesting to follow it's progress Brian.

How about a trial at f/16 to get a bit more DoF? I suspect you will be able to get both ends in focus then.

F/16 is worth a try. I am ambivalent about flash. Better detail but the colours get ugly.

My trouble is the typhoon. We will miss the wind but it could be quite wet tomorrow.

    Good one Brian.
Grahame has already addressed the one minor concern I had - DOF.

One purpose of paying attention to lighting is to convey shape. Compare this photo and the first one made with flash. In my mind, the first photo reveals the shape of the leaf better and the second photo reveals the shape of the cocoon better. Considering that the cocoon is the primary subject in both photos, the lighting with regard to conveying shape works better for me in this second photo.

it just happens that today I also shot with a -0.7 fill flash at the same time and position. I haven't done any pp except scaling. I must agree the flash doesn't do justice to the shape.

I usually find, Brian, that when I'm not using flash I need to add a little (sometimes quite a lot) of extra saturation and brightness, mostly highlights, during editing to avoid a washed out appearance with my subjects, particularly with subdued light. Often a little extra boost to the Blacks is also required.

Whether to flash or not is often a debateable question and sometimes neither option gives a perfect result.

Trade offs and compromises. Perhaps (not to open a can of worms) this is where the difference between taking snap shots and intentionally creating art/photography begins?

Using most people's definition of a snap shot, I agree that this is where the difference between the two begins.
