I like the color version but this monochrome works even better for me for the reasons I suggested that you consider making it. You mentioned that you were struggling a bit adjusting the tonalities, though there is no evidence of that in the final image. Well done!

thanks, Mike! I broke each color down using the color range tool and on each mask I applied a B&W layer adjustment, adjusting each value according to a matched B&W tone. A bit tedious but the outcome was worth the work. After I made each layer selection (7) I used Silver Efex Pro2 with a blue filter and nudged the brightness, contrast and soft grain sliders a bit here and there. It was fun but as I said above, it was tedious.
