Helpful Posts: It's that time of year to clean up the files. I ran across this fishing sequence that I thought might be of interest.
Nikon D4, 500mm VR, tripod
1/1600, f4, ISO1600
As always best viewed in the light box.
1) Target spotted
2) The chase
3) Swing and a miss and redirect
4) Success
5) Time to eat. This is a common technique used by many bears. They use a paw to clamp the flapping fish against the other leg. Then they eat it alive.
6) The youngster comes over looking for a bite. This looks like a second year cub(about 18mos old). Momma bears will share with the youngsters but they insist on good manners. The cub risks a good nip or swat from Mom if it grabs the fish. The sow will eat the prime bits, skin and roe, then give the cub the rest.
7) Oh boy!
8) And Mom gets back to fishing. And offers a great photo op!

Mine too! These are incredible shots! I have great respect for water and bears. I haven't seen one in the wild yet. Hopefully next year.

Glad you folks enjoyed the post.
A comment about shooting in Alaska. These were taken on a fairly typical overcast day. Not heavy clouds/rain. Just a grey day. Note the camera settings were four stops below "sunny 16". I probably could have gotten away with one more full stop on ss without significant motion blur thus could have dropped to ISO800. So call it three stops below sunny 16 settings needed to shoot effectively that day. I often wonder at how wildlife photographers got anything useful back in the days of film. Most of them would have been shooting ASA 64 slide film or possibly ASA 100.
