Thanks to Greg (FootLoose) for suggesting that I cut the artichoke in half and to Binnur for then confirming that doing so would create a nice photo opportunity. I had never seen an artichoke or a photo of one cut this way, so it was very enjoyable to see this view and then to photograph it.
For those who are not used to seeing my photos of food, this one is made in my style that presents food in a context we normally don't experience or at least don't notice.
Setup
The artichoke is held upright by a jerry-rigged contraption behind the vegetable that is narrower than its stem. A small continuous-light lamp is on the right side. A flag behind the lamp prevents light from falling onto the background. A flag in front prevents light from directly entering the lens and causing flare. A white reflector on the left front area brightens that side of the vegetable and the shadows in its center. A flashlight brightens the center of the background made of purple art paper just enough to create a pleasing glow around the subject.
