    Orion Nebula

    Hi

This image was taken on the 22/10/2016 on what seems to be a rare occasion we have clear skies,
Orion Nebula(M42) is now making it's way back into the night sky from the east and is quite a favourite of mine,

this is 6 x 5 min exposures taken with a Canon 600d attached to my telescope a skywatcher 130pds, which has a Focal Length 650mm (f/5) iso was set at 400
Images were stacked together with Deep SkyStacker(DSS) and processed with Photoshop cc15
hope you like and thanks for looking,
    please feel free to comment/critique.

By way of critique, I have no clue. Commenting purely as a viewer, it's lovely. Are the star patterns a natural result of the optics, use of filter, PP ? However you got there, it's nicely done.

Prior to reading Dan's post, I was getting ready to make the same observations and ask the same question that he posted.

Tremendous photography. This is an example, it seems to me, of 'know your subject'. Whatever genre of photography you specialise in (learning the light for landscapes; the behaviour of insects for macro; skin tones for portraiture; etc) getting to know your subject as well as your gear puts you into a strong position to then create the images that you want.

Whatever you had captured there and the beauty of it, I am in awe of what nature has to offer up there for us that photograph things that are land-based. A glimpse of something up there here and there is a good reminder to all of us that the world doesn't top at what we see from down here, that there is more to it than we can grasp with whatever means or process of thought.

Delightful and fresh ... another world.

    Hi Dan
No filters used to create that effect,
The star patterns are a natural result of the light diffracting around the support vanes of the secondary mirror in reflecting telescopes, (defraction spikes)some people like them, some don't,

Wonderful image JemC , out of interest what do you use to connect your camera to the telescope and also to support the telescope

Two things come to mind immediately:

    1. I love the photo and I can see the skill you have invested into the capture of the image and its post-production.

    2. I note with pleasure the fact you got this great result using a comparatively modest camera. This is timely for me as I have recently put on a show of "Inferior Images" at my local camera club, basing the title on the fact the images are taken with older consumer-level DSLRs, compact and bridge cameras with tiny sensors. I did in response to what I read on anther forum where the following advice was given to a person just starting in photography...

If you are serious about photography and you want great photos, you need to invest up front in great cameras. Look at professionals, you don’t see them with cheap gear”.

Your photo alone belies this comment, the skill is in the way the image is conceived, captured and presented, all of which you have done wonderfully. While not insignificant, modest gear can still render excellent results.

I have spent a lot f time observing M42 through binoculars a 4.5" and 8" reflectors. I have never tried to get a shot.

My first thought is that your shot is too solid & bright. Second thought followers from the first, the subtly is missing. On tge plus side it is one complex subject that you hsave done well with

    Hi Peter
    Thank you for your comment,
In order to connect my camera to the telescope i use a low profile M42 Lens to Canon EOS EF Mount Adapter and then attach either a 1.25" or 2" nose piece in order to insert into telescope focus tube,
To support the telescope i have a equatorial mount which can either be mounted on it's own tripod or in my case i have it mounted to a permanent metal pier in my garden,

    Regards

    Hi Brian
    Thank you for your comment,
i have to somewhat agree with your thoughts, in it's current state it is a little solid and the core is a little overexposed, however this is just 30 mins worth of data and there is a lot more detail that i have yet to capture,
I am pretty sure once i have captured more exposures and processed it, the subtly you mention will begin to show through

    Regards

such kind words, thank you Maurice,

however i don't think i would class myself as such
i still have a lot to learn in this field, i have only been dabbling in astrophotography for about 2 years now, so i still class myself as a novice,

    Regards
