Bad luck, you showed great patience, on this occasion did not pay off.

?*&$%! It's like recording the last episode of a must-watch serial and having the last 5 minutes fail to record!

Nonetheless, thanks for the journey Brian, we enjoyed it.

Awwww, bad luck Brian. I enjoyed your photos though and like you said it was still an excellent learning experience, and all great shots.

I'm sure he/she must be nearby, perhaps you will still get a shot. After watching for so long you will know when you see it, if it is the right one. Good luck, I hope you find it.

One of those occasions where you should zoom in (pixel peep) after each shot and see if you are satisfied with what you see. I was doing some night shooting recently, had the camera supposedly stabilized and shot after shot was soft or just plain blurry. I tired different apertures, flash, and still couldn't get a focused image. Luckily I saw the missed efforts while in the middle of the shoot and left the scene only slightly miffed.

sound advice. But in this case it wasn't missed focus. The butterfly emerged and left while I was sleeping
