    North Shore, Lake Superior

This past week we traveled to Tofte, Minnesota for our fall trip. It was our first trip without the big dog and it seemed a little empty. The three legged one had fun hiking but she tires tires our pretty fast.

Thanks for the good words. Noche' is a nice pup but she tires quickly. She's of the three legged variety as she lost her left front quarter to a bone cancer and then survived a recurrence (so far.) She will run to the point of exhaustion and sleep it off. I can't take her hiking over rugged terrain because she can't navigate it any more.

A couple more shots. This is Father Baraga's Cross. Father Baraga was a missionary who made one of the first documented crossings of Lake Superior with the help of the Native Americans. He erected a wooden monument to give thanks but years of rugged winters took its toll on it. I don't know when this cross was erected.

Wicked Shots, Paul. I unconsciously suffered a chill with the first one. I am thinking it was a bit chilly.

Nice images Paul. We did a drive around all of Lake Superior about a year ago and I recognize one of your lighthouse shots.

Randy, The temperature was in the 40's but the overcast and dampness made it feel colder. Friday was an absolutely beautiful day. The temps were in the low 60's when we left the lighthouse around 11 AM. It's back to work for a week and then to Sheridan, Wyoming for 6 days. It is more of a "working" trip (no photography) as we will be putting some final touches on the house we are building. It will be nice to have a little more room. It will be done in April.

A really enjoyable set of photos. I especially liked the hollow rock image -- the underwater pebbles and rocks are visible for an amazing distance. Did you use a polarizer to cut reflection on the surface of the water?

    Thanks for the kind comments.

Bruce, I did use a circular polarizer as it was very bright that day. The water there is very clear and deeper than it looks. I would like to do some shots of the hollow rock in the winter but the temperatures may be prohibitive. It is cold in the summer there.

I am intrigue at your use of a reverse MD filter. Why? I see the result but what is the difference? How did you attach it to your lens? All your shots are beautiful and well executed. Your dog is a pretty one too. I kinda like her...

P.S. Sheridan is a very pretty little place. We used to go to rodeos there each year quite a long way back...can you take some photos? Many things should had changed by now...the little township is an interesting place, maybe not so little anymore...

Izzie, The Singh Ray website has some very good info on filters. I used the reverse grad on a sunset by putting the hard dense edge directly on the horizon. The filter effect is lighter as it gets to the sky. I use the Cokin P holder on my Fujinon lenses. Be careful with wide angle lenses as the holders can cause vignetting.

Thanks. I will try to go to the website you told me. It will be interesting to learn more about using ND filters.
