    Grey Heron

This heron seems to spend much of its time very close to the goose/swan feeding area at my local nature park and doesn't mind if you approach as near as about 15 feet. I used my Sigma 150-500 lens at approaching 500mm for this. (Also took lots of rubbish shots of other birds (in flight, mainly), all deleted).

Wish I could see a full shot of this guy to see the differences between the Gray and the Great Blue. I've managed to get one shot of an albino and they are quite interesting. Good detail on this one.

    Thanks Chris,
This is a shot from a while back, not the same bird but taken at the same location. I couldn't get a decent full-bird shot the other day.

Most notable is the lack of browns and reds in the the front, neck and shoulders. Pretty bird, though.

The first shot looks good for a portrait. The second shot is better but need cropping a bit older than the other one. I don't know which one I prefer, I guess the second one because it includes its environment with it.

    Re: Grey Heron

That second shot cropped down to where it's almost all bird would look really nice. It's a great photo.
First is good too, but the second tells the whole story.

    Re: Grey Heron

My guess is the second shot was uploaded by Dave almost SOOC for ID purposes for Chris.

The first is very good Dave

    Re: Grey Heron

Thanks Dave. You're right-I hadn't originally intended to post the earlier shot.

I am determined to get more use out of the Sigma 150-500, which I've had for ages but not used a great deal. I'm quite pleased with the head shot, but to be honest it was not very difficult: the bird was about as still as a church monument! I need to practice shots of birds in flight, which were notably absent on this visit. Two days later, passing on my bike, minus camera, the air was thick with them!

    Dave
