It looks oversharpened to me Dave and I think the contrast is a bit too much . Stepping back a bit might give a better image

Having Golden Retrievers I can certainly relate to the problem!
A clever idea and nice image, I like the first it gives me the real impression of the spikeyness of those teeny pesky burrs.
