This is very nice, John but I reckon you overdid the sharpness a tad. It is showing on top of the trees as a white shadow??? O think my eyes are tired by now reading all the posts here...

Wonderful composition and conversion. I don't detect any sharpening issues.

    John,

A very nice shot--good composition, good lighting, etc. However, I have to agree with Izzie that it looks overprocessed. I didn't think at first that the issue was sharpening, but now I do think that is part of it. If I enlarge the image, I see halos in a number of places--particularly on the border between the trees and the sky, but also on the borders between the posts and the water. However, I still don't think it was sharpening that first caught my eye. The image almost looks like the B&W version of an overdone HDR. E.g., the clouds. Maybe tad less contrast?

In any event, it seems to me to be a nice enough image to be worth some additional tinkering.

Thanks all for the comments. Izzie/Dan, I don't recall sharpening this at all however, it did need a contrast boost and I think that accounts for any halo around the posts - but it doesn't seem too significant to my eye. It may also be due to the fact that I recently reset "Re sample" under "Image Size" to "Bicubic Sharper" since that is the recommended method for reductions. The tree line is another matter. That is almost certainly due to the fact that I have selective altered the exposure in the area of the sky and of course treeline the selections are never absolutely accurate. There are things that you can do about that but I've been a bit lazy.

Thank you Jean. The sun came out shortly after I took this but this is (IMHO) by far the best image I made that day.

I use Bicubic Smoother when down sizing and then I apply an unsharp mask according to my taste as Bicubic Sharper oversharpens the image a bit John . Also because I apply the unsharp mask with a different layer, I can add a mask and brush out the unwanted parts according to my taste. This way I have more control over the image

Thanks for the info Binnur. I helps to have suspicions confirmed. The technique you describe is also interesting. I think I might give it a try.

Thanks John. It is a lovely small community in an idyllic setting and known for the fact that it has three churched of differing denominations sitting side by side.
