    Shasta

I shot these images of Shasta, a young Maltipoo female, last night.

She had extensive surgery for a fractured pelvis (probably from being hit by a car) this morning and she is doing quite well!

Such appealing animals. Hope she makes a good recovery. BTW, do you ever run out of names? Presumably, very often they are anonymous when you rescue them?

Sometimes dogs come to us with names and other times we need to name them. The Internet has multiple sites with large selections of dogs names.

We actually number each dog with our own serial number which is a two digit year and a three digit I.D. number. So the 100th dog we have saved in 2016 is numbered 16-100, and so on! We do this because often dogs come to us from families might have the same name and could get confused. The number keeps them individualized and we don't get confused. We also know at any time how many dogs we have rescued for that year by looking at the last number we used... As of yesterday, the last number we used was 16-196 for a pregnant terrier. Her puppies will also have their own numbers - we suspect that there are 3-puppies waiting to pop out.. We will be at well over 200 rescue dogs for 2016.

Additionally, very often, when a dog is adopted the new family will change the dog's name. So having a permanent ID number keeps our records straight.

Sometimes a name will just fit a dog. We named this puppy, "Panda".

We have just rescued a beige poodle mix from the euthanasia listing of a high-kill Los Angeles area shelter. We have named her "Caramel" because of her coloring.

    Shasta

We have this small poodle mix that we named tiny - guess why? Because she is!

Sometimes we give litters of puppies "theme names". Recently it was Disney Movie Characters. A year or so ago, we received a pregnant mom with a French name. We gave all the puppies French names.

Depending on the dog, my ratio of shots to keepers is usually somewhere around 5:1 or 10:1...
