Looks good to me Brian (i.e. not dark)

It all looks natural to me and I think processing brighter could have lost colour/detail in the eye.

If mine, I might have burned the highlight sheen in the lower left corner by 1/3 to 1/2 stop.

Very good DoF, stacked I assume, as I think I see some artefacts on the left wing leading edge and left second leg, but these almost look like shadows, while the rest of it seems perfect (to my half trained eye).

... and who'd have thought a fly's posterior would be so interesting

This demonstrates a problem I find with flies; they are significantly easier to photograph from behind (at macro distances), as getting that close head on usually results in them departing the 'set' in the blink of an eye.

    Cheers, Dave

Nice shot. Maybe it would take a fraction more midtone brightness; but only a little.

Apart from the eye colour it looks rather like our Snipeflies (Rhagionidae) or Stiletto Flies (Therevidae).

It is stacked but not focus stacked. I'm using Capture 1 to make universal tweaks. Then I make as many clones as needed. in this shot 4. In each clone I adjust one feature. Export to ImageJ, reassemble and do final tweaking in Gimp.

Lately with & without flash I have been getting some interesting eye coloring.
