A break from Yosemite. A Highland Croft house.

I've been chained to the computer processing images from Yosemite and the Eastern Sierra since I got back from my trip at the beginning of October. But you have to escape every now and again and get the chance to remind yourself just how wonderful our own Highlands of Scotland are. And for me, they also mean 'home'.

For those not familiar with the term, a 'croft' is - "a small rented farm, especially one in Scotland, comprising a plot of arable land attached to a house and with a right of pasturage held in common with other such farms."

Crofting is a way of life in the north-western highlands of Scotland. There is a long history of crofters fighting for legal protection in relation to the land they occupy. An understanding of the history of the highlands, including of the Clearances (the forced eviction of tenants in the late 18th and early 19th centuries) is necessary to appreciate what crofting means in terms of the psyche and culture of we highland Scots. It's infused deep into the blood.
