Cold front

High winds and blowing snow as an Arctic cold front moved in. The ambient temperature was minus 15C, the effective temperature with the wind chill (50 km per hour wind) was minus 27C. Today the ambient temperature is minus 32C, but only a slight breeze and walking around is not nearly as painful/life threatening as it was on Sunday when I shot these.

I really like the shutter speed you used on the first one because it so effectively shows the snow blowing in the wind.

My camera manual explains that the camera is to be used only in ambient temperatures at or above freezing. That's my excuse for not taking photos in these conditions and I'm sticking to it.

Now theres a real photographer, anyone willing to go out minus -32 deserves great images and by did you get them. A very, very well done.

Trevor, nice picture. We're having the same temperatures here without the snow. I was in the Bighorns hiking the other day and the wind was really howling.

It's the wind at these temperatures that will get you. I once had to walk about 2 miles at minus 55C, but it was dead calm so as long as I was moving and fully covered I was in little danger. I suspect that even with full coverage I would have been hard pressed to walk the same distance on Sunday. The wind chill temperatures are misleading, they say "feels like minus 27C" but a lot of heat is lost with the wind and can be effectively much more dangerous. Environment Canada (the government weather service) tried to bring in a more effective scale based on Watts per metre squared to measure the heat loss, far more accurate. They gave up, no one liked it, except a few nerds like me.

They didn't specify what freezing point in my manual (not that I would ever stoop so low as to read it), so I assume it means carbon dioxide at -78.5C. Besides, if I went with water I would only have a shooting window of six months.

Try putting your finger on chunk of cast iron which has been stored in a freezer for several days. That should remind you.
