Fabulous image, great DoF, composition and the sweep to the mountains.

Re: The Land of the Midnight Sun
Good heavens! Suddenly there's someone else still using a DCS-R1 - then I saw the Exif!
Still a nice image.

Good choice to go black and white. The tones and textures are great.

Re: The Land of the Midnight Sun
Thanks Maurice, Tony, Trevor and John. Tony, it's an old image. I used to use the DCS-R1 as a holiday camera even after graduating to a DSLR because of it's excellent Carl Zeiss lens but it's a big piece of kit and relatively noisy at anything above about ISO 400. So it now sits in a display cabinet looking at me because its trade in value is zero. It's a sad end for a well made precision instrument forced by the march of technology.

Very nice composition John A bit too crisp though, too much sharpening ?

Thanks Binnur. Perhaps? - but it's not a recent image and I can't remember how I processed it. Any one else got any thoughts?

Re: The Land of the Midnight Sun
I still have my R1, and love it; never tried it for B&W though... maybe I should.
Nice pic btw

Very beautiful aerial perspective and curves drawn on the sea.

Re: The Land of the Midnight Sun
Thank you Peter, Gary and Jean. Peter, I know I talked of a lack of P/ex value but actually I'm quite fond of the camera. It was the first quality digital camera I ever owned that was a bit beyond point and shoot and I think it was the first perhaps one of the first to have an articulating screen. That lens also looks impressive.

Re: The Land of the Midnight Sun
I agree with prior comment that this is a good choice of B/W. Generally speaking the shot is nicely composed. But split horizons rarely work and IMO this is not one of those rare times. Vignette also feels a bit heavy.

Re: The Land of the Midnight Sun
Thanks Dave, thanks Dan. Dan, the vignette immediately registered with me when I read your comments but I wasn't so sure about the split horizon. It isn't quite on the C/L. However, I had a play and ..................
.............which I like a lot more if only because the more panoramic format emphasises the sweep of the ships wake even more. So thanks for the push. It's an old image but I might re visit it. I could probably do a better job of the PP today.

Re: The Land of the Midnight Sun
Even the slight offset is an improvement IMO. But it's personal taste. Losing the really dark portion of vignette at upper right removed a distraction. It is a nice image.

Excellent composition as always, John. The edit is better slightly.
