    Locust and breakfast

Visited the Walter Sisulu botanical gardens on Thursday morning and spotted this wee chappie enjoying his breakfast.

    Beautyful colours, sharp and nice.
Maybe I'd crop closer to the locust.

Good capture Neil. I wonder why nature has added the red colouring.

That's a great photo, Neil. I researched the grasshopper and think it's a foam grasshopper (Dictyophorus spumans). It's insect #5 on this site: http://scribol.com/environment/anima...ects-on-earth/ It protects itself when threatened, to paraphrase the referenced site, by secreting a 1 meter-sized, nauseating chemical stench "umbrella" around itself. My guess is that its red markings are to make itself know to predators. (Toxic and "nasty" insects are sometimes very vividly-colored.) It's a good thing you didn't disturb its breakfast!
