    Old against new

    Hello all,

About a year ago I bought a Canon 70D. I was so happy with my new camera. Unfortunately I have put away the camera. I did not realize the camera was so bad in focussing, and when I aks the store to repair the camera it only confirmed what many users say about this camera. Canon does not admit that it's just a bad camera. In the shop there was a mechanic from Canon's techrepair and started asking all sorts of questions. I was still feeling uncomfortable. The salesman who helped me last year recognized me and he said to me, go sit down, have a cup of tea, I'll inquire whether we can help you. When he came back he made a proposal which I could not turn down. He offered me a new Canon 80D against my Canon 70D for the price of a second hand sale price. Also I got 2 years free warranty and the 2 year standard warranty here in Netherlands. Finally, I bought a new lens, the Canon 24-70 F4.0, trading in my old lens and Canon cashback I saved € 385.

All in all, I thank the seller for their understanding and they helped me tremendously. Of course I need to get back to full confidence in Canon but the expectations of the Canon 80D are better than my previous 70D.

That sounds like you've found a camera shop that cares about its customers!
Good for you, hope you enjoy the new 80D.

This is why I would rather deal with a guy across a counter than someone halfway across the country via emails. It sounds like you have a good local shop.

Wouldn't get that if you bought it over the internet. Do wonder what happened to the 70D

Probably true but not necessarily true. I recently bought the second, updated version of a tripod head over the Internet directly from the manufacturer the first day it was released. It was expected to be shipped in 4 weeks.

Five weeks later I asked about it. The first point of contact got back to me within an hour that they were sorry for the delay, that the delay was caused by an unexpected manufacturing delay caused in turn by a large number of orders, and that they would provide one-day shipping free of charge. I wrote back explaining that they should have reached out to me to let me know about the delay, that the expected date of shipping was still very vague, that they were still advertising to new customers four-week shipping dates, and that they should show me more respect by stopping telling me that the delay was caused by such a huge response by customers.

About 15 minutes later I received another email from someone higher up the ladder agreeing that I was 100% correct and apologizing that they had really blown it. He offered to provide the product for free once it becomes available and also offered to provide the first version temporarily for free until the second one is shipped.

I took the first offer but had no need for the second offer. My credit card was credited 100% of my payment the next day, which is when I also received documentation for a free order of the product.

This is a good followup on the discussion we had on this topic a little while ago. The fact that they are into a Rev 2 version already suggest to me that there is a significant technical issue with the initial version and you might wish to keep your options open on upgrading to the second version. The issue could be anything from it not working as designed right through to a high risk of premature failure.

I wonder if you are confusing two products we discussed. The information I posted above is not new and is not of a follow-up nature; instead, it's information I provided a week ago in another thread that you participated in after I posted it.

The first product we discussed is completely different from version 2 of the product in question. Version 1 of the product in question was released almost three years ago, so it's not as if they are "already" into version 2. Moreover, I'm not upgrading to version 2, as I have never owned version 1. That's because I knew it would not meet my needs. As for keeping my options open on Version 2, it is being provided to me entirely free of charge, so there are no better options to be kept open.

If you're interested in the details of the two threads you participated in, see this thread opened in April and this thread opened in early November for the discussion of the two products. I didn't buy the product discussed in the first thread because its release price was higher than I could justify. Its price has since risen about another 25%.

    Re: Old against new

I purchased my first DSLR on the Internet. From a vendor in Brooklyn. Now, I am sure that there are honest Internet vendors doing business from Brooklyn (Just as I am sure that a flock of winged pigs has just flown over my house)

Anyway, after what I considered an inordinate amount of time, I had not received my camera and I phoned the vendor. When I was not put through to customer service but was connected with a salesman, I began to have doubts about my purchase.

What these folks tried to do was to SELL me the accessories that come with the camera from Canon: battery, battery charger, user manual and, yes even the camera strap. I told them to cancel my order. They said that they were going to ruin my credit and I said that I was going to stop charges on my credit card, report them to the King's County (Brooklyn) District Attorney and to begin a campaign on all the Internet photo sites to let people know how crooked this vendor was I started telling the salesman specifically which sites I was going to blackball them on and the address and phone number of the County District Attorney.

What happened then was that I won - they shipped me the camera with accessories that came from Canon at no additional cost to me.

Of course, I told them a bare faced lie Even though I got the accessories at no extra cost, I did report them to the Internet Fraud division of the D.A. and I told my story on at least six Internet sites.

I had to send that camera in to Canon within 90 days of purchase. I have always purchased my cameras since then as Canon Factory Refurbished items, either from Canon USA or from Adorama...

I suspect that the anonymity of some internet sales make it easier to provide lousy service, but it is no means a given that internet vendors will provide poor service or that bricks-and-mortars businesses will provide good service.

I have bought much of my gear from B&H for years, and every experience I have had with their customer service has been excellent. In contrast, some time ago, I went to a local store (since gone belly-up) to buy a white-box L lens that they had at a good price. They were so rude to me that I walked out and ordered a refurb from Adorama (which also has great customer service).

The bottom line for me is that I buy from merchants I trust--both locally and on the internet.

But in any event, Arnold, I'm glad you got good service and that your problem was resolved. Enjoy your new camera!

That's quite possible Mike - I thought this was the product that was late in shipping due to manufacturing startup issues. If it is not, then my comments might not apply.

    Re: Old against new

Before Canon introduced the 70-200mm f/4L IS lens, I was seriously considering the 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS lens because I wanted a telephoto lens with image stabilization. This was years ago (2006) when image stabilization (or whatever the individual manufacturer called it) was not all that common.

However, I kept reading about problems with the Canon lens at 300mm when held in the portrait position with the IS turned on. The salesman from Calumet Photo (which once had a brick and mortar store near my home) swore to me that there had been absolutely no problems with this lens. They had five in stock.

I decided to trust him and returned in a few days to buy the lens; only to learn that Canon had recalled these lenses for the exact problem that I had asked about.

Lucky for me, before Canon released the 70-300mm IS lens again, they had released the 70-200mm f/4L IS which I purchased online from B&H. I have had this lens for ten years loved it ever since.

So much for personalized service at a brick and mortar store...
