    Dawn Down Under

Though I'm nearly always awake, for some reason I rarely take the time to shoot sunrises around home. Whereas when on holiday I feel nearly compelled to do so. Of course being near a coast with ocean waves offers opportunities that I rarely get a chance at too. Which may provide the motivation

The first really good opportunity presented itself while we were staying at Ohope Beach. The previous day we hiked across the headland to Otarawairere Bay. There are some interesting rock formations with surf breaking on them which looked like a prime opportunity for some long exposures. So the next morning I drug myself out of bed around 0430 and (without coffee) hiked over the hill to the bay. I had the place to myself all morning and luckily didn't fall into the sea.

All following were shot with D7200, 16-80mm, Sirui CF tripod, Cokin ND and GND filters

    1) 10s, f16, ISO100, shot facing east after sun was above horizon but still obscured by mountains/low clouds

    Dawn Down Under

    2) 13s, f16, ISO100, shot facing west 20 minutes or so after sunrise. The waves splashing in the slot in the rocks and the green of the algae caught my attention here.

    Dawn Down Under

A few days later we were staying beach front in Whangamata so it was a bit easier to get out.

    3) 6s, f11, ISO100, shot facing east 20 minutes before sunrise. The ripples in the sand seemed like the most interesting feature to take advantage of.

    Dawn Down Under

    4) 5s, f16, ISO100, shot facing west five minutes after sunrise. Tried to incorporate the sky reflected on the wet sand.

    Re: Dawn Down Under

Thanks, guys. We had some beautiful morning our last week over there. Just had to show up and not goof it up. Which I did the last morning in Whangamata. I went for a re-shoot of the rippled sand but goofed up and had the camera set in crop mode. In my dazed, pre-coffee state and shooting in live view(which I almost never do) I didn't do so well

Just gorgeous. My favorite is the first for the reflections in the small pool. You need to get up early more often!
