Don't take any notice of those stupid signs that say 'don't feed the wildlife'.

These are aquatic tortoise.

But terms turtle and tortoise were often interchanged by the ignorant and could cause some confusion - at least to those who didn't know what they were talking about.
In the past (in Australia), all freshwater turtles were called tortoises and marine turtles were called turtles. No-one ever got confused and life was simple. But then the School of Political Correctness graduates took over the world and issued the following edict:
The more recent convention has been to restrict the term 'tortoise' to the purely
land-dwelling species. So now Australia has no tortoise.

OK, that's my grumpy old man rant for today. And no, in spite of those appealing eyes, I didn't feed them

Now see for the rest of us it's not confusing either. Land dwellers are tortoise, water dwellers turtles regardless of type of water. But for a nation that does everything upside down it's a tragedy that political correctness is causing you to conform to the world wide norm. Being confused the entire time one is on holiday down there or whenever talking to Ozzies abroad is part of the national appeal. What's next, driving on the right? Then we might as well save the long flight and go on holiday in Arizona.
