Thread: More Moon shots

    More Moon shots

Canon 70D; Sigma 150-500; tripod, mirror lock-up, 2 sec. time delay.

This was the moon-before-the-supermoon (which latter was too shy to appear here). I am always surprised how small it appears even taken at over 400mm with a crop sensor camera. I'm also not sure whether I've overdone the processing in #3.

#1 RAW processed on default DPP settings to JPEG, no further processing.

#2 Cropped and processed in PSE.

One thing that usually strikes me about moon shots is that they often don't convey just how bright the moon is, which is one reason I tried this (view large).

Nice shots and you're right, when correctly exposed to show the detail it never looks as bright as it appears in the sky.
A day or so before or after the full moon is actually better to my eye simply because there is so much more detail in the shadows on the "flat" side. You don't see that detail when the moon is full and what shadows there are are behind the crater edges from our point of view and are hidden.
And yeah, I think it's a little over done in the last shot. Just a bit too much contrast/structure.

Nice trials Dave, I think an edit between #2 and #3 would loook better but it is a nice shot anyway

Thank you Graham. I will try the less-than-full moon shot at some stage. Just need the weather to co-operate (I had intended to try for one when I took this, but no chance before or after on that occasion. One day....)

Nice shot, Dave. Yes it looks better being not quite full as you've shot it here. Even the slightly angled light shows much better detail. I agree with others that no.3 is slightly over done.
