Not an owl, it's a frogmouth
Couple of shots of one of my favourite birds. It's a Tawny Frogmouth which might look a bit like an owl but it isn't one.

What a tiny , cute bird I would crop half of the vertical branch in #1.

Nice captures. We have a very similar bird in the eastern USA known as the whip-poor-will. When I was a kid we called them night-n-gails.

Thanks John, Binnur & Dan.
They're not particularly tiny though this one is about 40cm (16") long and 10cm(4") between its eyes.

Nice captures Graham, I rarely get a shot of them with their eyes open. Their closest relatives are the Nightjars.

Re: Not an owl, it's a frogmouth
Thanks Richard. I've posted shots of one of these before and it had its eyes closed. I've been lucky with this guy, he's just north of Brisbane at Murrumba Downs and these two images below were taken nine days later only about 10 metres from where the other ones were shot. Must like his territory.
Couldn't get this angle without the branch
Up close and personal. Not much DOF at 600mm and f11.

Very nice set of images; its eyes are not as harsh as that of an owl; in the last two images its eyes are philosophical tempered
