I like the face-on view, but the body looks too dark. A little exposure compensation would have been called for.

#2 is better for the Grebe ('Great Crested' I think), but I prefer the water in the first, so the next step is to locally apply the post processing to just the subject
some people are never satisfied

+1 to what Dave said. One of the few birds that comes off well facing directly at the camera.

In our club it is often repeated that the eye goes to the lightest part of the image first. In this case, Les, I consciously try to look at the bird then end up looking at the water.
