    Bodie State Park, California

I have created an album of my images of Bodie, from my trip to Yosemite and the Eastern Sierra earlier in 2016. Rather than bore you with one image at intervals, I'd invite you to view the album.

Unfortunately, I can't find a way to arrange the images in the album. They just sit there in the order in which I uploaded them. I think you need to think about the running order before you start to upload.

Anyway, I'd be grateful for your comment and critique on them as a group of images. The album is at https://www.cambridgeincolour.com/fo...p?albumid=3812

My 'cover' image is that of approaching Bodie from the south-east.

    Thanks for doing this Donald.

It does indeed make sense to look at the album as a whole and a pleasure as ever, but probably needs some time to digest.

As far as the individual images are concerned, my thoughts (which are more a reflection of my taste and not of your photography) are that Winding gear, Security, Bodie from the graveyard, The Sawmill, Old Timer and North along Main Street just jumped off the page. Unusually, there were a few that did not click, these being Approaching Bodie from the South East, The Road out to Aurora and The Graveyard from Town; I think that it was the B&W of the scrub ...

Nice series as a whole, were you not allowed to shoot interiors? Most conversions were very crisp, a few were a bit noisy but perhaps intentional.

You can shoot through windows and the interiors of the one or two buildings that are open. I chose not to do either. Supervised/guided photography visits (such as those by Michael Frye) do obtain access to the inside of buildings (usually after normal closing times).

I can remember visiting there as a kid on one of our family vacations. It struck me then that the lure of what was being dug out of the ground must have been pretty strong to get people to live out in that type of environment. Not much has changed since then and you've captured it well Donald. People back then must have been made of very stern stuff to survive out there.

Been waiting for you Bodie shots, they have an old school feel to them, and I mean old, old school look. It works well with the buildings and your own style of shots. I myself did not go B&W as it was the colour of the wood that I loved. Very nice indeed, worth going back sometime.

    Cheers: Allan

A very interesting collection. I have gone through it twice quickly but will have to find a chance to do it again more slowly.

I was intrigued by your use of grain and very high contrast in many of the pictures. I like the contrast as a general rule (I used to use a very black, high-contrast paper most of the time when I shot black and white film), and the grain can be effective, but they are both very different from what I recall seeing from you in the past.

A number of them struck me on my first pass as particularly good: 3, 8, 11, and 16.

A number of them seemed overwhelmed by the background, in particular, 2, 9, and 12.

While I like the high contrast, you pulled the blues down too much for my taste in a few, e.g., 7, 8 (although I really liked this one in other respects), & 14. I'm sure this was intentional, but I don't care for the effect. It looks very unnatural, and the heavy weight of the negative space distracts me from the interesting parts of the image.
