Geoff ~ Completely off topic of your P52 but since you are scanning photos, how do you keep the little dust spots that invariably show up when you scan the photo? (at least that's what happens to mine....) Are you doing lots of editing on these photos? Thanks!
These old images, mostly postcards, are all suffering from various amounts of neglect and general wear and tear from the past 100 years or so. Which means quite a bit of restoration work is required on all of them. But that is a good way of learning various techniques for general photo editing, which is usually a lot easier.
In the past each town, or even small village, had at least one professional photographer who would take formal family portraits and produce local scenes for sale as postcards.
Before cameras became a common item and without any media coverage except for regional newspapers they would photograph local events or disasters etc and print on postcards. People would then purchase these cards to send to friends and relatives who lived in other areas. Only a few people owned telephones and they were either businesses or wealthy people.
At that time there were at least 5 postal deliveries every day!
People travelling to visit friends in another city could post a card saying something like 'Leaving on the 8 am bus today, please meet me at the bus station. And the message would be delivered in sufficient time.
Just one per day for domestic addresses, Bruce. I'm not sure about business now, because at one time you could pay a charge to have a second afternoon delivery.
Delivery times are totally different now and unlike the previous early morning deliveries your mail can arrive at any time of the day. So variable that the actual delivery time will vary considerably from day to day. Mine is usually between 10 am and 2 pm.
Week 07 - Icy Morning near the bird hide Had several attempts at shooting this scene, from various angles but when I saw the results on my computer screen I realised all the other shots failed because they lacked sufficient foreground. This is cold for here, but probably more like a warm Spring day for many of you.
7D with Tamron 24-70 lens. 1/125 F11 iso 400.
There were several Brent Geese on the mudbanks and this pair were having a squabble about the ownership of that patch of mud.
Sigma 150-600 Sport lens at 600. 1/4000 F8 Iso 400. I had been having problems with keeping the shutter speed high enough at F11 so I dropped to F8 but when I changed the shooting angle for this quick handheld shot the shutter speed considerably increased. Afterwards I reverted to F11 for some other shots but they never had the action of this scene.
Love your icy day shot! You were right about the shot needing good foreground and you did good!!
Nice shots for the week.
Very nice indeed
Always enjoy your Project 52 series Geoff - I do love the scenery that your photos capture.
Two good images Geoff, #1 does convey a cold day.
Thanks for the comments.
Week 08. Volunteers taking a break. Part of the volunteer work gang from the woodland reserve where I take a lot of my wildlife shots, particularly flowers and insects. A grey day with rain threatened, so I just took my pocket sized camera. Tried to get a shot showing informal conversation and interaction but struggled to keep my shutter speed high enough. in the poor light.
Fuji X20 1/170 F6.4 Iso 400
Looks fine from a shutter speed perspective - two conversations going on. The guy at the top seems a bit left out, and with his green soled boot almost looks like he's attached to the guy underneath him (I started staring at the photo a bit too long).
Geoff, the picture worked out well – particularly the very significant DOF, despite a relatively wide aperture. But perhaps this was because of the wide-angle lens on your pocket-sized camera?
Yes, Bruce, F6.4 on that camera is more like F11 on my full size equipment. I tend to forget this and often go narrower than is necessary.
And the man in the background, Mal, is a newcomer to these events. This is only his second volunteer group so he hasn't quite worked his way up to joining the expert old hands yet.
i'm late as usual but the before and after images of Torcross beach are fascinating. Nice work.
