Yes, it was wet, cold, and overcast, so the lighting was diffuse. It made for an ideal shot.
    Thanks, Geoff.

Mark, the man had such a wonderfully fascinating look I just had to try and get a shot.
As for the Benny Hill show, it always cracked me up.
    Thanks.

Thanks, Jean. I was able to get a candid shot thanks to zone focusing and that he was busy watching some people set up for a reenactment.

    Re: The Mariner

That's a great portrait Sergio. Good pose and lighting. I think that killing some of the peripheral highlights would make it even better (window top light and the rail he's leaning on). Something like:

    The Mariner

You probably didn't want to cut the window in half but if it is taken down it becomes less obvious.

Thanks, Dave. I did think there was so much character in the man.

John, thanks for taking the time to show me your version. Originally I did reduce the highlights on the light but any more without cropping made it look unnatural to my eye. Unfortunately, I feel the crop makes things too tight and cramped for my liking plus it removes some of the context of the scene; more of the wreath giving a sense of the season. Toning down the highlights on the rail in conjunction with the lamp reduces the overall contrast of the image. The man no longer pops and the image as a whole seems (IMO) somewhat flat.

This of course is my opinion/taste, and I appreciate and respect yours. Again, thanks for your time.

I've switched back and forth between the two versions in Lytebox. I agree with Sergio that the reduction in contrast in John's version makes the image look flatter. This is interesting since one would think that the bright rail, etc. would detract from the man himself. But for me, without the broader contrast (whiter white point?), the image loses some of its punch.

You're welome Sergio and of course you are quite right. If we all saw things the same way, variety wouldn't have any meaning.

    Re: The Mariner

It is a good portrait and I prefer John's adjustments, except for cropping half the window which somehow seems to affect the balance of the image. Apart from the hands, the tones of the man do not appear to have been changed so that, for me, the viewer's attention is drawn more to him and he 'pops' more from the lower contrast surroundings. But to each his own.

    Cheers.

Bruce, thank you for posting your findings. I too found it interesting.
