Week six of Project 2017.
What I would have liked this image to portray, was a real sense of the speed the train was doing, heading towards the tunnel
I have not achieved that, the train looks static.
What settings (approximately) should I set my camera to.
This image settings were, f5.6. 1/400sec ISO 200 FL 105mm hand held. A tripod can be used, if needed.
It was a cloudy day.
C&C needed.

I think I would shoot from the front and stand closer to the ground in order to give the sense of a speedy approaching train:rolleyes:

Gary, I'm wondering whether a panned shot might help achieve your objective of showing the speed of the train. If you shoot from ground level (trespass on the rail right of way?) and keep the camera locked on the train as it speeds past, you'd end up with a streaked background. But this would probably require that you be back some distance from the train (?) and that may not be physically possible?

Yes, this is another very tricky shot. I can see your idea of showing the top of the carriages in the foreground and a view towards the far distance tunnel. But the foreground is softly focused while the far distance is sharp; I would have preferred it the other way around. Possible show more of the train? Perhaps show half of a carriage more to give a longer train with more perspective?

Adding some selective motion blur just to the train may produce an impression of movement; but it will be a different sort of image to this current scene.

I've found that lower angles and panning help with the perception of speed. Have you tried PP with a different finish to see if you can create a finish that gives you the "speed" feel?

Would a longer exposure produce some blur and give the sensation of speed?

Where I was taking the from shot, was on a cast iron pedestrian bridge and rattled any time a train went under it.
In this case a longer exposure was not an option :)

On to week 7.
This image was taken at Errol station (now closed) and Signal box (still operational) on the Perth to Dundee line.
I took this image with the main subject being a large roadside mirror, that assisted drivers of a blind corner.

That is certainly an interesting artistic approach. The background is nicely soft but still gives an indication of the overall scene without being distracting.

An interesting concept, complete with curved power poles, etc.!

I've wondered whether darkening the sky slightly might be good but am undecided.
