The Pier
With subzero temperatures and a 60kmh wind blowing I am too much of a wimp to venture out to take photos today. So, I am at home playing with some editing. This image is one that I took on Christmas Eve. It is a local, and well known landmark, but I wanted to portray it in a different perspective than what is normally done. I wasn't aiming for complete realism in the image so I guess my idea for posting it is to find out what you think when you view it as you don't know what it looks like for real. I am open to good and critical feedback

Re: The Pier
Hi Rita,
I do wish there was a bit of water texture more in to the lower right corner (but not touching the edge of frame). Also, try to reduce the contrast at the transition, or sharpen before the white vignette, so the latter doesn't make the dots suddenly stop with such a well defined edge. This isn't what I'd usually do, so your image has taught me something tonight - there are times when output sharpening shouldn't always be the last thing I do.
For some reason, the diagonal braces seem to have come out with more contrast than the verticals, whatever the cause, I might be tempted to reduce that by some means (if mine).
The composition works for me.
That's being nit-picky, because "you asked for for it"
I like it, Dave

Re: The Pier
I really like it Rita, It has a surreal haunted feel to it.

Re: The Pier
I like the processing to give you this nice contrasty B&W. Interesting lines, angles and shapes and great vanishing point.
White Rock?

Re: The Pier
I like it a lot, Rita. My only suggestion is to eliminate the white vignette at upper left so the nearest part of the pier is clear. Then it would have more of a sense of disappearing into fog. Nicely done.

Re: The Pier
Rita - I think this is a nicely done image, but find that your application of the negative vignette is a bit heavy-handed in places.
What I was taught many years ago was that the best vignettes were the ones your viewers didn't know were there. I think that applies to this image; pull it back to the point where you just notice it yourself. Don't get rid of all the detail and texture in the image

Re: The Pier
Very effective treatment. The lead in from the top left hand corner could be a little darker.
Is the wharf safe? You have made it look a bit rickety.

Re: The Pier
Thanks for the feedback Dave. I am posting a revised edit with a change in the contrast. Not sure what I can do about more water in the right corner, I will have to play around with that as there wasn't any in the original.

Re: The Pier
Manfred, thanks for your feedback. I do see what you mean about the vignette. That was the main thing that I wasn't to sure about myself.

Re: The Pier
Thank you Paul. Yes, this pier is very safe. This image was taken pre-dawn so there was no one around. After sunrise people start arriving and at times it is totally filled with people.

Re: The Pier
Ok, I have removed the vignetter and added just a hint of foggy look to the far end and darkened the upper left corner. Here is the revised edit......

Re: The Pier
I immensely like both versions. The first one seems just a bit surrealistic, the second one more realistic. It really depends on the look you want.

Re: The Pier
Thank you Mike. I personally am preferring the 2nd one. The surrealistic effect was my original aim but I think I need to rework it with some different techniques than what I used. At this point I have no idea what the different techniques will be but I will figure it out

Re: The Pier
I certainly like the original version but I would suggest a crop at left/top so that you lose the leftmost vertical support and just clip off the top of the horizontal support above the nearest right vertical. (Hope this makes sense: I'm viewing on iPad so can't download and crop myself) I feel that in your second edit there is too much emphasis at the top left, which somehow works against leading the eye into the distance.
