I think this photo is pretty good and very close to great. Things I really like:
- City in the background giving a sense of place.
- Wake turbulence, looks super cool, adds motion to the shot.
- Right/left placement of the 737 in frame.
- Overall orientation/direction/perspective of the 737 in the composition (your shooting angle was good)
- All the right elements to make a great shot. Green grass, plane, city, clear horizon line, sky.
Things I find problematic:
- Lightning is flat, as previously stated... not your fault, photographer's luck.
- Composition is a little uninteresting. I think you have all the necessary pieces here and no extra ones, which is great. I would look to play with the framing a bit and see what works, depending on how you want to tell this story. I have a mind to agree with Richard somewhat, that more sky should be framed and less ground. I tend to think the right/left 737 position in frame is pretty good though.
- I would try to defocus the background a bit more if possible. Not sure what your exposure settings are here, but going a bit wider on the aperture might result in a more painterly background of buildings.
- The sky is boring. The sky could be interesting. Again this was probably out of your control on the day.
If you were to go back and shoot again I would recommend you underexpose, get good exposure on the sky, and pull up the RAW shadows. Frame a little differently, aperture change, etc as mentioned. Just suggestions, no idea if they might work.
With the city background, a dusk or night version of this perspective might be very compelling.
Incidentally, have you been photographing the same aircraft as me!?!?
(Note, this image reproduced very small because it's meant as a bit of fun and I don't want it to detract from Graham's image.)
