Good capture... I might crop a bit off the bottom to end up with less grass...

The light was obviously dull at the time of shooting but you have still managed good clarity on a moving subject.

Yes Geoff. I was not happy when I got to the spot and it started raining but it began to clear after about 30 minutes an I managed to get a few aircraft arrivals before it started again. I was trying out what was my then new Tamron 150-600.

I think this photo is pretty good and very close to great. Things I really like:

    - City in the background giving a sense of place.
    - Wake turbulence, looks super cool, adds motion to the shot.
    - Right/left placement of the 737 in frame.
    - Overall orientation/direction/perspective of the 737 in the composition (your shooting angle was good)
    - All the right elements to make a great shot. Green grass, plane, city, clear horizon line, sky.

    Things I find problematic:
    - Lightning is flat, as previously stated... not your fault, photographer's luck.
    - Composition is a little uninteresting. I think you have all the necessary pieces here and no extra ones, which is great. I would look to play with the framing a bit and see what works, depending on how you want to tell this story. I have a mind to agree with Richard somewhat, that more sky should be framed and less ground. I tend to think the right/left 737 position in frame is pretty good though.
    - I would try to defocus the background a bit more if possible. Not sure what your exposure settings are here, but going a bit wider on the aperture might result in a more painterly background of buildings.
    - The sky is boring. The sky could be interesting. Again this was probably out of your control on the day.

If you were to go back and shoot again I would recommend you underexpose, get good exposure on the sky, and pull up the RAW shadows. Frame a little differently, aperture change, etc as mentioned. Just suggestions, no idea if they might work.

With the city background, a dusk or night version of this perspective might be very compelling.

Incidentally, have you been photographing the same aircraft as me!?!?

    City Flyer

(Note, this image reproduced very small because it's meant as a bit of fun and I don't want it to detract from Graham's image.)

Thanks Julian for you comments and suggestions.

The wake turbulence is mostly jet efflux with a hint of vortex at about the third top floor of the building on the left. It's caused by airflow off the trailing edge of the flaps.

Not much I could do about the sky and light except go back one day. It's a difficult place to shoot because you have to be on top of a 2 metre step ladder to be able to clear the airport's security fence so I'm not in a great rush to get back

I've already cropped away quite a bit of ground from the shot and feel that if I went further it would start looking too much like a panorama.

I've actually enhanced the background buildings to sharpen them up to make the city look even closer.

It may be the same one as yours but Virgin has 75 of these -800s in their 737 fleet and I can't read the rego on yours or mine. I'll have to get a sharper lens.

    Cheers Graham,

Seems as though your priorities are a little different than mine shooting airplanes. Which is great!

And it's almost certainly not the same aircraft. Mine is VH-VUU and was landing at Adelaide Airport from Sydney. But I was being cheeky.
