Cold Snap

I was working at the dining room table this aft when I noticed it had begun snowing big fluffy flakes so I grabbed the camera and tripod and squeezed off a few shots through the window. I toned this to match the climate (baby, it's cold outside). Happy to see that we may be getting relief on the weekend.

We seem to have about the same temperatures, except yours are Fahrenheit and my are Celsius!

This is a different frame, with a different treatment. It is a lot sharper, and has greater DOF.

A comparison of the first and second versions is a great example of when and why I prefer an aesthetically pleasing image lacking ideal technical proficiency over an image with with ideal technical proficiency lacking the pleasing aesthetic characteristics. For me, the smaller depth of field is preferable because of the more complementary background. Especially when printed on a note card, the lack of sharpness and detail in the first version's subject may not be noticeable due to the small size.

Point taken, Mike. Still, I do need and want to improve my technical proficiency, and in all areas. Comparing the original of #2 and the output here, I can see that I need to learn more about sharpening and downsizing. As to #1, I took it into Photoshop last night to see if I couldn't get some text or something on it to fill what seemed to me an empty upper left corner, but I got distracted by textures.

I still know next to nothing about Photoshop, but I managed to generate this:
