    2017 Project 52, 1st quarter by Judith Noble (Urbanflyer) C & C desired always

For 2017 I will be working on seeing and capturing images specifically for the joy of photographing. I will set aside one day each month to shoot and then pick the best of these for my weekly posting. I will use the photoshop skills I developed in 2016 but will, hopefully, be able to minimize the post processing if I am careful about initial capture. I will use some of the approach I learned at the Miksang Institute a number of years ago. And maybe I will master the Wacom! C & C is how I learn.

    Week 1

I spent my January day in Seattle's International District.

Nikon D40X. 200 mm. ISO 800 because it was a dreary day and I was hand holding at 100th-- shutter priority. The high ISO seems likely to be why the shot seems noisy. Used a couple of tricks to reduce the noise in post but it still seems noisy. Any other ideas, other than the ISO, would be welcome.

    Hi Judith,

Since you've already mentioned the noise I just have questions.

Did you shoot RAW? I ask because of how the image is presented, you said the day was dreary and that is how you presented your subject and the atmosphere; no POP at all within the composition.

Which editing tools did you use besides noise reduction?

When you spotted your subject did you have time to choose your camera settings or were they already set based on the atmosphere?

Yes--I shoot RAW. I did have time to choose camera settings, shot a couple and made adjustments after each. Used Camera Raw Filter, exposure adjustments, masked the figure and increased exposure on her alone. Some sharpening. This was taken down under a structure where the light rail stops. I did not want to brighten it for pop since the dreary day was part of the atmosphere--however I am interested in your thoughts.

I hope you do not mind Judith, I tried to reduce the noise in your image with the Nik collection Define on auto and it has reduced the noise a bit.

Thanks--I have not worked with any of the Nik collection--perhaps that is something I should look at!

I like the image Judith, I prefer Gary's noise reduced version though

Noise reduction can cause a bit of softening, Judith, so what I often do is to convert one image from the Raw files to suit highlights and midtones and another version with more noise reduction for the shadow areas. Then combine the two as layers with an edited mask so the extra reduced noise from the shadows only appears in the desired areas.

Fairly easy to do when using a Wacom (or similar).

    Hi Judith,

Unfortunately you provided too much detail on the location, conditions of the day to make the photograph more intriguing. Of course you could have done the same with a title, such as "Waiting for a Train on a Dreary Day" and we would have been satisfied with any inquiry we might have had, however you could have misled us with your title or inferred a particular situation based on your own bias but I doubt that you would. And this is what limits this particular composition for me, mystery solved perhaps, I know where the woman is, what she is doing, and the only question left is where is she going; but that information (where she is going) isn't that important. If it were me I would limit providing details of environment, let the viewer become engaged with the image and search for details within.

Winter garden-nicely composed and good capture of the texture. A bit soft but I have a habit of looking closely; especially if there are shadows.

Thanks--I guess I struggle with "soft" so maybe you will tell me when I get it right!

You're not downsizing correctly for my viewing conditions; for me (and many others I suspect) I'd like to see this after:
    1) downsizing to say 1400 x 1000 pixels (forget ppi/dpi and physical sizes)
    2) output sharpened (I use USM at 100% amount, 0.3px radius and a threshold in the low single digits)
    3) Then uploaded to TinyPic

However, it doesn't end with you...

    4) As the viewer, I (we) must ensure there is no browser zoom; Ctrl+0 does this
    5) I'd use F11 key to ensure my browser was in full screen mode
    6) I'd click the image to view in LyteBox and hit the "F" key to ensure 1:1 viewing

Only then can we be sure that the sharpness you see is (as far as practical), the same as I'll see.

What you did was upload at larger than 1600px on longest edge, which in turn resulted in TinyPic downsizing it to 1599 x whatever and that softens it - add to that people not viewing on a screen of that size, meaning the browser may further downsize it, again softening it and that's a part of the problem.

This (internet viewing of images) is a topic I spent a lot of time (a few years back) researching the issues, so forgive me - it has become a bit of a hobby horse that I tend jump on when the situation arises

Intended to be helpful to all, Dave

Great composition! It really captures the feel of a garden in wintertime.

This is one of those scenes which are rather difficult to get looking sharp even when correctly focused. At full screen size it appears acceptable to me.

i like both the images; i really appreciate your keenness in finding the art in the second image, which, one mostly wouldn't notice
