    Lost in his music

As weather isn't too cooperative for getting outside I thought I would play around with an image at home. I don't do this kind of thing very often so I would be interested to see what you think. My aim here was to have this image look like his whole being was in the music. When he was playing he was so into his music, and he was really good too. The image of the musician was taken a few months ago at the beach and this is my result from playing around.

I get into doing photocomposites every so often, so I know how much fun they are and how challenging they can be to pull off.

If I were doing this I would likely use a layer mask to reduce the influence of the sheet music on the musician a bit more than you have. You wants some of it there, especially on his clothing, but you don't want to drown him in it.

    Re: Lost in his music

I like the way the musician seems to be coming out of the music; his face, hands and saxophone are relatively forward of the music, whereas the rest of his body is still within it. That's a nice three-dimensional effect that might be lessened if you reduce the presence of the music on his clothes.

It's likely that he is playing jazz or a style of music that is a similarly popular genre. If you choose music that is a similar style, it would make more sense to me, as the music you selected seems to be in the classical style, a vocal duet accompanied by a keyboard instrument, probably a piano.

Maurice, thanks for commenting. When I was in my early days here there was a thread running for composites and it really intrigued me. I have been practicing doing some of these and just learning as much about them as I can. They really are a lot of fun to do.

Thanks, as always, for your feedback Mike. I really was hoping that no one would notice the music. When I did this I was only playing around so I just grabbed the image of the music with no real expectation of getting this together. After it did I realized that the music wasn't quit the right one to use Guess I could say that he was accompaniment to the singers instead of a piano or not. It is definitely a detail to watch out for. Definitely a detail to watch out for though.

I like this concept: I have a montage Portrait (oil and paper) similar to this of a particular Musician friend.

Love the palette you have chosen and the dominance of the saxophone keys. I agree with those suggesting making the music less obvious on the clothing.

    Very impressive.

I like that very much Rita. The only thought I can add is that a small slice from the top might balance the comp a bit more but maybe that is just personal preference. Your setting a great example. The weather here is not that inspiring (dull and grey) and so ....................

    Thanks Bill.

Paul, I am going to play with that over this weekend and see what I think.

John, thank you. I will try what you are suggesting. We have had so much bad weather I think I am spending more time inside than out this year.

    Re: Lost in his music

I agree with Mike that the musician seems to be "coming out of the music"

However since I never learned or desired to learn to read music, one sheet of music pretty well looks the same to me as any other and I never looked at the sheet closely...

I kind of feel the same about music as did General and later President U.S. Grant. He said, "I only know two songs. One is Yankee Doodle and the other isn't"

However, I do love Bagpipes but, some folks say that isn't music

Thanks for commenting Richard. I also like Bagpipes, much to the disapproval of a lot of my friends.

Very true Maurice. I am a firm believer that whatever one does for work or as a hobby it should be enjoyable to them. Not everyone can say that they have enjoyment from their employment but I can say that I really love my work, and, I love photography.
