Well... for someone who didn't talk Joseph Koudelka was fairly expressive!

What a strong image, uncompromisingly strong lines the take you to the old man in what appears INITIALLY to be a simple construct.. I find the roof above is very dominant and lends a sense of tension to the image for me, almost as if it is constraining him rather than acting as a shelter...

I always appreciate your creative use of negative space. However, regarding this image, I would be prone to crop off the band of sky above the roof line...

This is a tricky one... I get what Richard is saying about the temptation to crop the sky down, and I tried two the variants below:

The first is pretty brutal and makes the roof seem even more oppressive...



The second, less extreme, is perhaps more acceptable as it encourages the eye to follow the roof line to the corner, but softens the effect by leaving some sky above.



To me it highlights the complexity of the construct in what seems at first glance to be a very simple image!

Trev / Richard - another approach would be to make an even more brutal crop and cut the roof line even harder to open up the shot. I agree with both of you that this part of the original image creates a rather disjointed shot. Going to a square crop (and just attacking the top of the image) give you this....






I just wish that the shadow detail were handled with a bit more finesse.

I wondered about that... and this crop works quite well too. I guess it all depends on the impact the photograph is meant to have. The original has a lot of tension in it (to me), whereas opening up the overhang relieves some that.

I also like the high contrast and lack of shadow detail as this emphasizes the shapes and angles and creates a somewhat abstract image. It seems almost yin and yang like. Well seen, Fernando.
