Thread: You won't like this competition - it's painful...

You won't like this competition - it's painful...

If you have opened and are reading this thread, I regret to inform you that a reply (with images) is MANDATORY! No laughing at how the other half lives (in squalor). No smirking from a cyber-distance. Being a new member is NOT an excuse. In fact, it's a good opportunity for you to post an image.

    Here's what you will do...

    1. Get your camera - that black thing (unless like me you also have a pink Panasonic G1)
    2. Take a shot or two of your photographic work area. Yes, I know it's painful, but that's the point, and it's about time you learnt that life is hard.
    3. Post the images to this thread.
    4. Write a short description of anything interesting about the contents
    5. Crawl into a corner in embarrassment and await the deluge of mocking derision.

VERY IMPORTANT (seriously): Make sure your images do not show anything that may divulge your exact location.

Entries close on Sunday October 3rd at noon.

Anyone found to have tidied their work area prior to taking the shot will be in big trouble from Colin . Any one Photoshopping their image to remove 'embarrassing items', will be in even bigger trouble from me, and you really don't want that...

The winner (decided by me) is the one with the worst work area. Their prize - a Dyson vacuum cleaner and a good slapping from my wife - may be awarded.

I'm expecting a lot of replies to this...

Here's my desk area. I use a spare bedroom of our 16 bed mansion to doss out in. Note the very fine print on the left of the Tay Bridge (thank you, Donald). Note also the way the expensive non-reflective glass doesn't reflect the flash-light. The credit card bill on the desk is for camera stuff (of course). The box of tissues on the shelf is for when I weep after seeing some of the shots on CiC. The mug contains coffee. It would normally be a glass of red wine. I must be having an off-day today. Please don't blow up the shot and turn it sideways to see what books I read - that's a very sad thing to do.

You won't like this competition - it's painful...

This is the same room, but the opposite end. I use this area for my indoor photography of small items. Note the north-facing window for a good natural light. The silver cabinet on the floor is my medicine box. Note the sophistication of my lighting set-up. Note the callous disregard for H&S regulations, despite the fact that my wife is H&S trained.

"The engines canna tek it, Cap'n".

I just love those grooooovy 60's curtains. I could use that fabric for cushions in the back of the Ferrari.

Thanks for going first Mike. Brave man. I have taken your listing out of the 'auto-delete member next Sunday' file.

Come on, let's have the rest of you.

all present & correct here mr m...

I have arrived home today and in the recent traditions of Oztraylia I feel after the hung parliament & drawn footy Grand Final, that i must give equal exposure (insert large smiley groan here)
I will show you the his & hers of our 'study'

You won't like this competition - it's painful...

Here we see 'his' or in Bean Counter speak, the 'Income' side of the dbl entry booking keeping ledger
BC tells me works so hard he needs x2 p.c's ....I have a sneaking suspicion he is really all the while trying to work out how to fund his next windsurfing safari

Then looking to the 'expenditure' side we have me...

You won't like this competition - it's painful...

note exhibit A - imac - all the better to see the blurry bits what aren't meant to be that way
I have no lighting equipment to show you, but have my wee grey card ready for more portraiture practice and I also have been having a wee play with a piece of black art cardboard, objects around the home & the trusty desk lamp.
So am trying to expand my repertoire beyond the bouncing ball games

    & finally the real truth...

You won't like this competition - it's painful...

Just look at all geek girl's mags & books my goodness what a sad sad act! - although at least the photography ones outnumber the pd job ones 3 to 1...so maybe that's ok.

The Dear wee chap at the rear is 'The Perfect Man'....you squeeze his hand and he says wonderful things like..
    - "you have the remote, as long as I'm with you i don't care what we watch"
    - "no dear, you don't look fat in those pants"

maybe he's the ladies equivalent to the blow up doll?

Excellent, Kay. I'm a tad concerned about the twin desks policy though. Are they connected, or do you have to keep 'em apart to avoid a scandal? I'm seeing a lot of black from here. Have you been influenced by Mike (above)? I'm not seeing many images on the walls!

Confirmation given that I have taken your listing out of the 'auto-delete member next Sunday' file.

Let me get this correct... you are teaching the dog (nice dog) to use Photoshop? Over here in the UK that would count as animal cruelty.

That can of Lite is a very subtle touch. If the result is close that may well clinch it!

I am in the process of moving so my workspace is a bit barebones right now. Imagine what you see here but with books overflowing the shelfs and scanners overhanging the top of the hutch.

Now, this one I like, Dave. This is getting more like it. I love the seamless blend of photo-preparation area and cocktail-cabinet. This appeals to the bohemian in me. It looks like my wife's side of the bedroom.

This is my dump and I ain't cleaning it. The colour is caused by ten years of heavy smoking, yes I've only smoked ten years up till a surgeon said I have good news and bad news; the good news is a top surgeon is on his way from a nearby hospital, the bad news is he's stuck in traffic and I can't guarantee you will live longer than five minutes.

No really I thought this was a bad idea but then I thought what the hell, I didn't buy anything in this dump apart from camera and computer stuff and beer and that is all I'm interested in.

You should see how nice my stuff looks in the ex wifes house. Mmmm except the top of the range Kenwood stack cos that was nicked by somebody else.

ps the bugs moved out long ago and all the draws are full of new clothes, hence washing stacked up.

Thanks, Steve. Nice one. This also appeals to my bohemian aspirations, but if truth be told I slightly prefer Shadowman's sense of louche disorder and callous disregard for middle-class convention. Perhaps you can dis-improve it a little? Anyway, you don't need to win a Dyson, as I see you already have a vacuum cleaner. Does it have a plug on it by any chance?

Congrats - you are still a member!

So! This is how the Nowegians live is it? You have a study converted from a sauna, which was converted from a garage. You have an alpine ice-axe, Spanish guitar, and a boomerang on the wall (do you have a national identity crisis by any chance?). I don't see many photographs on the wall. You have a crazy wrist-angle on that lap-top. You have a special hook for your stereo head-phones!. And that chair... it's no good... I can't continue, I'll say something I regret and get into trouble again... I'm either moving to Norway tomorrow, or I'm going to cancel your membership account on CiC. I haven't decided yet.

    Next!

Rob - you honour me (I mean it) by having that print above your desk (Okay, you can take it down now!). Mine is at the framer.

Anyway. The command post really doesn't look as stark as this in real life.

I'm seeing black, minimalist, loft-apartment, Bauhaus furniture, 80's yuppie-control-freak, structure and discipline...

I'm also seeing the same seamless blend of photo-prep area and drinks centre as Shadowman - but his is somehow more earthy... more organic.

I have to say that the idea for this thread came from you. I kept looking at your avatar and thinking, "there's Donald sitting at his desk. I wonder what the rest of that room looks like" Now I know.

Your continued membership of CiC is safe with me.

PS: what is that cut-out in the desk for?
    PPS: Get a black keyboard.

I suspect it is to accomodate ones sporran otherwise you would almost certainly end up with road kill badger bristles jamming ones ergonomic keyboard.

Actually it all looks very classy. I was expecting turf roofed crofts, collops and peat fires. You live and learn
