Jack-up vessel

Trying out a lens I bought last year I did shoot those jack-up vessels in the harbour. On the waterline they're a sort of eye catcher. I hardly used this lens for it's to big and I need a tripod with it.

At the moment 4 of those vessels are laying here, with together 16 "legs".
Three of them you see from the front, the fourth is laying different.

The whether was quit foggy.
D700, 80-200 af-s 2.8

A few years ago I toke next one. Different gear.



I didn't resize the images, so when viewing at 100% it is 100%. I did so to make it easier to watch the details.

I wonder what the ground under the vessels is. In this part of Holland the ground is very soppy. Houses are build on pillars driven in the ground down to the first sand layer. And big houses to the second sand layer meaning 12 and 20m deep, in my neighbourhood.

The third from the left had to leave today. I wanted to make some photos but decided to make a timelaps, so I've both the photos and the movie.
To make it possible for the third to leave, the first two had to make room. At the start the first one has moved already. At the end my card was full before the last one was back to it's place.
I did choice an intervaltime of 10s, should be less maybe. But then I would have less on the card, in time.

I guess with oil prices recovering, these "jack-ups" are heading back out to the oil fields for some drilling work.

Interesting series George. Something seems to have happened to the first image though, as it is not showing up.

Probably I added the first image to an album. I don't know what happened. They are used for placing windmills on the North Sea. I just think in winter they stop working on the sea and are heading for the harbour and do maintenance.

Can you see the time laps??? I can't.

You used the Flickr address, normally the file location on the Flickr server is used. That's what happens with pictures. Must work with videos too.

I've more trouble with videos at the moment. When I click on your link, I still can't play the video. Neither on my mobile. When right click and select viewing with QuickTime, the quality is very bad. Looks like compressed to 30 or less. When downloading and then playing it'd sharp.

In this version I tried to correct the chosen interval time by playing with 15 frames/s.

It seems that right clicking on the video also has a choise "copy video location".

Fascinating series George. Those legs don't look substantial enough to support the vessels in the way that they clearly do, particularly in a high wind. Although, I guess they would offer minimal resistance if there is much of a sea running.
