If it's what I think it is, I had one in the late 40's. It was called a "jack knife". They had a big spike that was said to be for digging Boy Scouts out of horse's hooves.

Yes that has appeared very small. There is a discussion about the Tinypics issue and possible alternatives in this thread.

Actually, this "spike" is a marlinspike which are generally used...

As levers to open strands of laid rope when forming eyes or inserting items into the lay.

To untie knots that have tightened under tension.

As a lever or handle to tension marline or rope using a marlinspike hitch, much tighter than by gripping the line with the hand alone.

As an improvised weapon against hostile boarding parties - mostly off Somalia

    Re: Old Scout Knife

How are you posting the link here Pat.

Are you inserting the address into the photo frame icon from the tools bar? Select the icon then paste in the address line. The icon should say Insert Image when you hover your mouse pointer over it.

Initially, I had problems when linking from P base because I wasn't copying the full address; which meant I could see the image but other people could only get the address line text.

Choosing the desired image size before linking, or changing the size in the address line when you insert it here, is another little potential glitch.

Eventually, once I sorted out the initial hitches, I found it only took a couple of seconds to get a direct linking.
