    Apple

I was planning to photograph a bottle of wine but I first had to run an errand at the grocery store. That's when I got side tracked. After looking at a couple dozen apples, I selected this one because I knew the relationship between the stem and the rest of the apple would be appealing to photograph.

    Setup
The background is black velvet. A small continuous-light lamp fitted with a diffusion sock to reduce the brightness is on the right side at the level of the apple. A white reflector on the left side brightens that side of the fruit and stem. A flashlight set to its highest brightness at the right rear provides the bright tones on the rim of the apple and the right side of the stem. The flashlight is flagged to eliminate glare on the right side of the fruit. A polarizer eliminates a tiny spot of glare on the stem.

Love this one Mike. Your lighting sets off the apple beautifully.

    Re: Apple

I sent Mike a PM with two conversions to this image as I sometimes just like to play with an image to see what might happen, especially since I would have no investment in the final outcome. Mike suggested I post this one for additional comment. He did like it.

    Thank you to everyone!

Now that I am seeing Chris's monochrome version the next morning, I still like it. However, Chris, notice the four bands of light in the background very close to the stem. That's perhaps something that happened when working with my small JPEG and then making your version even smaller that might not have happened if you had been using my full-size original.

    Re: Apple

When I first saw the title, I thought you had switched from wine to apple cider, but I guess not.

What I like about the way you handled this shot is that you placed the areas that have a softer focus in shadow, and that hides this very well. You seem to be having a lot of fun with your macro lens.

I do prefer the original coloured version. Somehow I can't really imagine biting into a delicious B&W apple...

Thanks, Binnur! "Moody" is the way I also think of the other photo.
