Night time shots.

The weather has been fairly miserable the last week and have not been out taking any photos.
So last night I took my tripod and camera and tried some night time photography.
These shots are from a light installation on the banks of the River Tay in Perth.

No I did not use noise reduction, the image below has had noise reduction applied.
In retrospect I should have set my ISO to 100 rather than 800.

First shots works better for me than the others because the exposure seems better, there are no blown out highlights. Also composition looks better with the position of building in the frame

If you had reduced the Iso, Gary, you would have massively increased the shutter speed, in scenes with some movement. So I think you did the correct thing with these.

It was difficult to stop getting blow highlights with the strong spot lights and my long shutter speed.
I went back again tonight and tried some different settings to try and get a good exposure.

I went down to the light show earlier this evening and tried some different settings.
To reduce the noise, I set the ISO 100, opened up the aperture from f11 to f7.1 and increased the speed from 10secs to 15secs.

If you are far enough from the subject to get away with opening up the aperture that is the way to go. This looks OK to me.

Possibly Iso 200 would have worked just as well and given a slightly faster shutter.

I suppose it is all a bit of a compromise (exposure triangle), I am much more confident now when in manual mode, as I now understand the exposure triangle. It all a learning curve for me.

I prefer #1 of the first batch, Gary...and the last ones #5 and #6 looks better too. Just that there are no visible change between them at all. It would have been nice to see a larger version when one clicks the enlarged icon...just a thought...
