It may seem surprising after 24 posts in the thread, but we're still looking for one more to make it up to 10 to complete the set.

And remember, whoever posts number 10 should close this one off and start Mono Mini Comp #49 (or tell one of us to do it).

Yes, well, I'm thinking that, after all of the gorgeous photos in this set, others are reluctant. Soooo, I'll throw mine in for good measure but would really appreciate any thoughts you can throw at me for my sacrifice.

Katy, you would seem to have a fairly shallow depth of focus here. The old widow and loose boards look to be out of focus on my screen, which is a pity. With some aggressive contrast enhancement you could have picked out the details in the wood to good effect, but too much will be lost in the out of focus areas.

Oh, I've got the contrast and color boosted way up and the contrast all of the way. I just threw this one in to this pot but am thinking that I should try to redo this one in B&W with what I know, now.

Soooooo, B&Ws have good contrast, texture and light. Are they supposed to have a high dof? or does it depend on the story? Anything else? I looked a few times for a tutorial on it all but couldn't find one. Maybe there's a discussion thread? (Duh! Perhaps I should google it....) I've JUST had this epiphany in the last two days that some things I haven't been able to get because they need to be monochromatic. I hope that I'm not lowering the level of the competition. I didn't think that it would suffer because of my entry.

Yes, do keep at it. I have many versions of some images and keep editing until I find one I really like.

No not necessarily, it depends on what you are trying to achieve. It just seemed to me that with this particular image, the most interesting bits, the window and loose planks, couldn't be processed to good effect because they were out of focus.

Keep posting what ever you do. This is the best forum I've come across in years, simply because there are no barriers. You get friendly help, some very good natured banter, and we all learn a lot every day.

    Hi Katy,

Well done. I do like the composition and the subject matter. Mike has made some good points and I can see you are a soak for learning. Keep it up.

I do like the composition. If you stood face on to the wall the flowers/weeds would have formed a rectangle at the bottom of the picture and the barn at the top. Most likely a boring shot. With the angle you have chosen you have created a strong diagonal line (giving us a triangle with the side of the frame and that also draws us into the composition and the window at the back acts like a visual 'full stop' keeping us in the image looking at the texture of the old barn. I do like the proportions you have given each element.

I like the subject and think you could work wonders with this shot. It might be worthwhile re-shooting (if you can) with a smaller aperture for more DOF so we can see the texture and detail in the barn.

Please keep posting in the competitions.
