    Onion Skin

This is a section of the outermost layer that I carefully peeled away from a yellow onion. The magnification ratio is about 1:1.9, which means the scene being captured is just slightly less than twice as large as my APS-C sensor. The saturation was not increased during post-processing.

    Setup
The background is a relatively distant black carpet on the floor. A flash light is on the right side and behind the subject shining through the translucent onion skin.

Nice abstract: always good lights Mike, and thank you for your explanations.

Well I wouldn't have known it was an onion skin - what a wonderful world we live in to nature as beautiful as this

My wife thought it was an opaque piece of pottery lit from the front side.

Very interesting image. If I'd started guessing as to what this was I'd have been way down a list before I came to onion skin. Well done.

Ditto about identifying this as part of an onion Mike. Reminds me more of a potato crisp (potato chip?). However, this just goes to show what you (and I do mean You) can do with a minimal lighting set up.

Thank you to Dan and John.

Everyone: When I present abstracts, would you prefer that I identify the subject from the outset or that I wait until the thread has pretty much come to an end before I do that?

Very nice abstract Mike I would like to know the subject in the beginning.

    Continued thanks to everyone!

Based on the helpful feedback provided in this thread, I will continue to identify the subject of my abstracts at the outset.
