Such a well-reasoned post-processing treatment! Obviously began with a great composition.

Very, very well done. It has a perfect 1930's feel to it. You've got to be pleased with that.

WoW!!! That is quite a finished. Like creamy coffee! (Yep! back to drinking coffee this week...) Even the framing is an excellent choice. What's with the title? I missed the connection...

    Re: Union of South Africa.

    Thanks all for the comments.

Paul David, It was an evening shot on a not so bright day so a fair amount of PP to increase contrast etc. after the basic conversion. The toning and grain is a straightforward Silver effects Filter and then there was just some localised adjustment.

Thanks Graham. It is part of a series that I thought might go up on a wall (vetoed) or be the basis for an Album here but now TinyPics has intervened, that is going to be quite difficult.

Kaye, Tomorrow or Thursday is a possibility. Tomorrow would be better because Thursday looks to be sunny and the problem with the Settle Carlisle line in that it is mainly North South and so for much of the day for the north bound run at least, you are shooting into the sun. Might try for an early evening session but it is a bit early in the year.

Izzie, prior to the railways being Nationalised, as a market tool, the independent rail companies used to name their major railway locos or main line passenger services. An example you may have heard of is the Flying Scotsman which was both the name of the daily service from London to Edinburgh and the name of one of the locos that pulled it. As they have been restored the locos have been returned to there original colours and names. This one was named Union of South Africa and is a sister loco to Mallard, the loco that still holds the World speed record for a steam locomotive.

I sound like a real railway enthusiast. I'm not but just as you can't help learning about wild life through photographing it, inevitably................................

John, really +1 to all above, not my 'thing' but a seriously good image - it has to be to start with to get such a great finished image - and a great PP really works well with it. Indeed in ref to your statement about learning, if you want to photograph anything well you have to research and understand it and then be able to use that knowledge to gain an image at its best - no matter the subject

Last time I was up there the rain was horizontal, the time before that it was snow and it's not a place to be when it's snowing. It can be very beautiful in the right conditions Well done for a lovely photo

Very nice shot and treatment. I have a print of The Night Scotsman hanging in my livingroom that my brother gave me for Christmas one year. Says 'Leaves King's Cross nightly at 10.25 along the bottom of it..
